Tilt Racer turns a smartphone into a steering wheel for PC games
Tilt Racer turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a steering wheel for nearly any game on a Windows PC. You can tilt the phone to steer, and use a slider on the screen to control the throttle and brakes. The app even uses haptics to let you feel the controls. Now gamers on a budget don’t have to invest $50 or more in a steering wheel just to play racing games on a PC.
Racing games can be exhilarating, but the problem is that you need an expensive USB steering wheel to get the most out of them. Even a low-end wheel can cost more than the game itself! Tilt Racer is a new app from Touch Pilot that solves this problem. It turns your smartphone into a steering wheel, and works with nearly any game for Microsoft Windows.
Steering is done by tilting the phone left and right, and the slider on the right side of the screen is for throttle and brakes. The green zone is for throttle and the red zone is for brakes. This split slider lets you easily switch from accelerating to braking without taking your finger off the screen, or looking down. There is also a set of four programmable buttons that can be used for shifting, or any other functions you want at your fingertips.
One of the coolest features is the use of vibration to give you tactile feedback on the controls. This means you can actually feel the controls, and never have to look down at the phone while you’re driving. We all know how dangerous that can be!
Tilt Racer works by sending your control inputs over WiFi to the PC. You need to install the free server app, Touch Pilot Server, on the PC. It can be downloaded from Touch Pilot’s website at http://touchpilot.com/download. The server emulates a joystick on the PC, so the game thinks that the smartphone is just another joystick. That means it works with any game that supports a joystick or steering wheel. It can be used with popular games like iRacing, rFactor, F1 2012, Simraceway and just about any other driving game.
Touch Pilot co-founder Ben Hirashima remarked “Tilt Racer is the first app of its kind to provide the precise control gamers need to compete and win in modern racing games.”
Tilt Racer will be released on the iTunes AppStore and Google Play on May 14th, 2013. Pricing will be set at $4.95 USD. The app will be for sale in all countries supported by these app stores.
Touch Pilot was founded in 2012 by Ben Hirashima and Will Shepherd, two friends with a love of smartphones and PC gaming. The California based company is bringing second-screen interaction to PC games, much like the Wii U and Microsoft SmartGlass did for consoles.
